The Function of Deoxyarbutin
Deoxyarbutin is one of the derivatives of arbutin, called D-arbutin, which can effectively inhibit the action of tyrosinase in skin tissue. According to research, its effectiveness is even 10 times that of hydroquinone and 350 times that of ordinary arbutin. In animal skin tests, this deoxyarbutin can quickly and effectively make the skin white, and the effect can still last for nearly 8 weeks after stopping use.
In human clinical studies, topical use of deoxyarbutin for 12 weeks can achieve significant skin lightening effects, and has a good improvement effect on solar photoreflection spots and dull skin color.
Clinical studies on deoxyarbutin further pointed out that many types of tyrosinase inhibitors have been used in the past to reduce skin lesions with melanin accumulation. Deoxyarbutin produced using QSAR (quantitative structure-activity relationships) technology is a very effective tyrosinase inhibitor that has a significant blocking effect on melanin formation in the skin.
According to the test results of human skin melanocytes, the safe concentration of deoxyarbutin used can be more than 4 times that of hydroquinone while maintaining 95% cell survival, which means that deoxyarbutin is much safer to melanocytes than hydroquinone.
Furthermore, experiments on human skin keratinocytes (the main cells of the epidermis) and fibroblasts (dermis) indicate that deoxyarbutin is still much less toxic to cells than hydroquinone. What needs to be made clear is that in terms of the effectiveness of inhibiting the formation of melanin, compared with hydroquinone, deoxyarbutin can achieve a superior effect than high-concentration hydroquinone at a relatively low concentration.
When deoxyarbutin is stopped, the tyrosinase activity and melanin content in the skin will slowly recover, which means that deoxyarbutin will not cause the toxicity of melanocytes, and can allow melanocytes to maintain normal physiological mechanisms.
In an 8-week clinical study, topical use of deoxyarbutin can achieve a gradual but obvious skin whitening effect. Another clinical study further pointed out that the use of an appropriate concentration of deoxyarbutin solution can achieve good clinical results within 3 weeks.
Moreover, according to experiments, the effectiveness of deoxyarbutin against melanin can reach 10 times that of hydroquinone, 150 times that of kojic acid, and 350 times that of general arbutin (β-arbutin). If compared with the popular α-arbutin, it is 38.5 times.
